In 1560, Pope Pius IV donated the Soriano estate to Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo as a reward for his merits in the Council of Trent. The cardinal began the construction of the monumental Fontana di Papacqua near a fresh water source and, next to it, a splendid palace to be used as a summer residence designed by Ottavini Schiratti (now known as Palazzo Chigi-Albani).<\/p>\n

The Papacqua district, whose characteristic colours are green and red, joins the ‘Sagra delle Castagne’ \u2013 the Chestnut Festival, recalling the intrigues that afflicted the people of the past.<\/p>\n

The story of Giovanna Dabaldi is intertwined with the eternal struggle between good and evil, history and legend; it tells of a woman of a past age who was considered by all to be a healer. Giovanna inherited the knowledge of ancient practices from her mother; she cured people of their ills with herbs, flowers and roots and aided young women during childbirth.<\/p>\n

Everyone trusted her and asked for her help, but those were times when it was a simple matter for those in power to manipulate the weak and humble in order to control them. So, from a revered popular figure, Giovanna was transformed into a diabolical witch, and as frequently happened to many women in much of Europe over the centuries, she was accused of witchcraft, arrested, tortured to extort a confession, tried and burnt at the stake. Giovanna had no chance and fell under the brute force of the powerful and the ignorance of the masses.<\/p>\n
